Set in an overly disciplined boarding school, this story follows a group of adolescents as they grapple with the pressure to succeed imposed by both their families and the school.

It explores the conflict between living the future their parents have chosen for them and pursuing their own desires, along with how they cope with these challenges.

John Keating, the newly appointed teacher, introduces them to new perspectives, encouraging them to embrace poetry, live fully in the present, and, in the words of Walt Whitman, "participate in life with their own verse."
